Seperti halnya French Horn yang umum digunakan dalam konser-konser musik klasik, melofon pun memiliki tiga katup pengatur, namun tidak seperti halnya French horn yang di mainkan dengan tangan kiri, katup-katup pengatur nada pada mellophone dimainkan dengan tangan kanan dengan tata cara dalam memainkan yang identik dengan trumpet. Melofon pada umumnya menggunakan kunci F seperti halnya French Horn meski instrumen musik lainnya menggunakan kunci B♭.

Alasan utama melofon digunakan sebagai concert horn untuk marching band adalah karena alat musik ini memiliki corong yang menghadap ke depan (front-bell) sehingga suara yang dihasilkannya sesuai dengan arah pemainnya.
